I might change direction

Listening and absorbing i have come to the conclusion that i might change directions to a more two dimensional exploration of the same ideas. some thing of a mixed media approach with print, paint and drawing aspects. images to come later after some exploration.

  1. I think it's worth thinking about. I think what you're doing as 2-d is very strong, maybe stronger than the 3-d. But keep those funky guys going. They're you, and they need to come to life!

  2. I just finished reading Emily's latest post about her faculty crit experience and I must say that the last paragraph (or even just the last few lines)instantly made me think "Russ has to read this, it SO pertains to him as well." Take a moment and read it if you get a moment - you'll see why I instantly thought of your work.

  3. Hey Russ do you mean like the drawings you were doing that I peeked at when you had shown Karen?

    My rant.
And yes - (what tiffany said above) it pertains to anyones work. I feel Russ like you might have gotten too much backlash because your project is intensely personal. (and who's effin' isnt??) I'm not exactly sure if the teachers did not understand it because its not finished...that they say your objects are "not found"...that the stories are broken and hard to understand...I would seriously question it. Seriously. My work is intensely personal. I am exploring my parents; my family; in a way that in the long run is giving me much insight into who I am and where I came from - the source of my own identity. I studied my mother with my lens and saw her mother for the first time. A very weird feeling. This is for more than arts sake. Its for my sake. Mother is getting older right before my eyes. Tiffany's work is personal. Its through a traumatic event that she is finding peace in expressing HER TAKE on the healing process - an event that each person views differntly, and can relate to through tiffanys kick-ass work. This just isnt for arts sake - this is for the sake of her sanity! No matter who you try to please, remember that its your take, and your story. And you tell it well -- in such RUSS style. I, for one, like the story any way you tell it.A piece here, a piece there, creating a crazy narrative. Its out of these fragmented stories and narratives you create, that we begin to build the identity of the artist. Like a puzzle. People can relate to this intensely personal work very easily. We all have fragmented stories. We begin to see ourselves in our work. It makes us think!!
3d or 2d...you have strong work either way. Please, whatever you do, do it for arts sake and Russ's sake/sanity. Fo' Schizzle.

  4. I'm in agreement with everyone - you need to make this for you - just make your statement match your work. If the 2D plan works for you do it. Maybe make frames with your 3D figures that reflect some of the 2D content.

Your strong in both areas - use that strength... just nail that statement down and cover it in gauze.

  5. maybe taqke your figures and create 2-d images from them using photshop, printmaking and 3-d pieces but definately keep the characters what they are- and i am bummed you tore the piece in the studio apart!
