My Artistic Mythology
In search for my place in the Art world I have found that linguistics was not my strong suit as and I tended to see the cosmos through images and ideas and not words. I have also come realize that I will not be constricted to one artistic medium. This has had its advantages and disadvantages and forced me to make decisions that test my convictions, not only to the process but an aesthetic philosophy as well. I have evolved a great deal over the last couple of years from a closet doodler into a creature that wants the world to see and experience my thoughts, ideas and art. This however has been short-circuited over and over by not artist blocks but by simple economics. However, at this point, the ideas and art have seen the light and now they must be created. To adapt to this new reality I have gone the way of the scavenger. Finding paper, ink, paint, objects, or any thing I can get my hands on just short of thievery so my art could come into existence. This has not just affected the process of assembling the work but the works concepts as well. My work is now a series of conglomerations of ideas and biographical forms that record my life’s journeys. These journeys have become personal mythologies of sorts. They have become to have the randomness of journal entries or sketchbook page and the dependability of truth that exists in a sea story. They are flat and have depth; they are painting and sculpture, ideas and dreams. Knowing this, and embracing these truths, I seek to tell my mythologies through the manipulation of found objects and ideas. The works are stories and fables that are sometimes superficial and obvious, and then sometimes hidden, but all meant to introduce myself to the universe. My goal with these works is to reveal the cosmic artistic being that I have become and am becoming.
I wonder if you could use an example of the carved murals that used to be done in Rome and such. Those are all carvings that are slammed with content and yet still have meaning. That could relate to what you're doing regarding your "personal mythology", could it not?
ReplyDeleteI liked the comments about random journal entries or sketchbook pages. "Random" is a good word for you to explore more. Is this really about one story like talked about by the faculty? Or a chaotic compliation of random thoughts and ideas. Are we suppose to get a certain message? Or are we suppose to get lost in the wonder of it all? Should we feel as "ADD" as you when we look at these? This would truly be bringing us into your world.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I like what Tiffany said about "feeling ADD' when we see your work! If you go there, that would be so cool! You might have to use some color, though... ;)
ReplyDeleteOn a different note, if you still want input from me on your artist statement, just let me know. I would be glad to talk with you or email you a bunch of detailed comments if you want, but only if you think it would help. I don't want to mess with your brain too much!
